Portsmouth has always had the sea. What it's developed, more recently, is a proper reason to sit down and eat well. The range is there now — Iberian, Latin American, British, seafood, brunch — and so is the quality. These are the places worth your time.
For the View and What Comes With It
The Solent does a lot of the work at Water View Grill. Waterfront grills and fresh seafood, and a window table that frames Portsmouth Harbour in a way that makes you eat more slowly. The seafood is the reason to come — the views are simply what you're paying for on top. Book a window seat. If you can't get one, wait.
The Briny takes a different approach to the same postcode logic: easygoing, unpretentious, the kind of place where you order mackerel and oysters without overthinking it. The cocktails are decent, the atmosphere is easy. It doesn't try to be more than it is, which is exactly why it works.
Iberian, Done Properly
Portsmouth has two strong options for Spanish and Portuguese eating, and they sit at different ends of the mood spectrum.
Algarve's Grill is the more settled of the two — Portuguese starters, tapas, steaks and seafood in a room that feels genuinely comfortable rather than designed to look it. The wines are worth paying attention to. This is a place for a long lunch or an evening that doesn't need to be anywhere in particular.
Sant Yago is sharper around the edges. A Spanish bar and dining room with contemporary decor that leans into its own character — the classic tapas menu is the anchor, and the room gives it a bit of an edge. Good for a group. Good for a few plates and a bottle of something cold.
When You Want Something with Heat
Fuegos Street is Latin American street food done without apology. Big portions, bold spicing, and a menu that rewards people who don't hedge their bets. Order the tacos. The hot sauce is not decorative — use it. This is the kind of place where you leave having eaten more than you planned, and don't regret it.
It fills up. Go early or accept the wait.
The Room-and-Menu Combination
Some places work because the food and the space earn each other. Restaurant 1865 is the best example of that in Portsmouth right now. Grown-up room, relaxed service, and British cooking that takes sourcing seriously. The locally-sourced specials change, but the approach doesn't — this is a kitchen that knows where its food comes from, and it shows on the plate. The kind of place you take someone you want to impress without it feeling like you're trying to impress them.
The A Bar earns its place for different reasons. A modern bistro with an international menu, an open hearth, a conservatory and a terrace — it covers a lot of ground spatially, and the menu keeps pace. The terrace in better weather is one of Portsmouth's more quietly good spots to eat.
Saturday Morning, Done Right
Brunch has become a serious category in Portsmouth, and Brunch & Barista is the place to benchmark it against. Specialty coffee and proper brunch in the city centre, and — crucially — both halves are actually good. The eggs benedict and a flat white on a Saturday morning is a combination that holds up. A lot of brunch spots get the food or the coffee right. This one gets both.
