Mitch Tonks built Rockfish into a Westcountry institution, and the Poole branch earns its place in that company. Go for lunch when the light is good.
Lake Yard takes a slightly different angle on waterside dining. It's looser, more laid-back — the kind of place where you can linger over a bottle and not feel rushed. The cooking has a lightness to it that suits the setting. Summer evenings here are genuinely hard to beat.
For something with more architectural drama, Custom House Poole - Bistro & Bar occupies a handsome Georgian building just off the quay. The sweeping staircase alone is worth a look, but the real draw is the seafood-forward menu delivered with proper bistro ambition. This is a room that rewards dressing up for.
Where to Go for Something More Relaxed
Not every meal needs to be an occasion. Poole has a good crop of places where the food is taken seriously but the atmosphere isn't.
Bruno Lounge is the kind of all-day spot a neighbourhood needs. Stylish without trying too hard, the food punches above what you'd expect from the relaxed format. It works equally well for a solo lunch or a long catch-up dinner. The wine list is worth paying attention to.
South Deep has a similar ease to it — coastal flavours, Dorset produce, nothing overwrought. The cooking feels honest and unfussy, and that's exactly the point. If you want somewhere that reflects where you actually are without leaning on the clichés of a seaside menu, this is it.
Cliff Poole is a good shout for families — the sea-themed decor gives it a personality, and the seasonal menu with Mediterranean leanings keeps adults interested while children are kept happy. The kind of place where no one has to compromise.
When You Want Something Different
Poole's independent restaurant scene has been getting more interesting, and a few places are doing things that wouldn't feel out of place in a much larger city.
Thirteen is the one to book if you're after something more ambitious. The cooking is inventive without being pretentious — bold combinations, genuine technique, and the sense that the kitchen is actually enjoying itself. It sits apart from the rest of the Poole dining scene and knows it. Worth planning a visit around.
Italian Diva takes the opposite approach: a tight, classically-minded Italian menu in a room that feels intimate and considered. The pasta is the thing to order. It's the kind of place that fills up for a reason and doesn't need to reinvent anything to keep people coming back.
For something further afield on the flavour map, NUSARA Thai brings genuinely authentic Thai cooking to Poole — proper heat, proper fragrance, none of the softened-for-the-suburbs compromise. A neighbourhood Thai this good is not something to take for granted.
